1st Rhode Island Regiment

The 1st Rhode Island Regiment was a Continental Army unit famous for being the first American military regiments composed significantly of enslaved African Americans, free Black men, and Native Americans. Formed on February 14, 1778, after a legislative act allowing the enlistment of enslaved men in exchange for freedom, the regiment served with distinction, most notably at the August 1778 Battle of Rhode Island
