Al-Ghazali in Ihya' Ulumi 'd-din points out that the heart (al-Qalb) denotes two things: the physical heart and the spiritual heart. He, therefore, mentions that the spiritual heart is the essence of man. It contains the deeper intelligence and wisdom and it is the potential seat of God's illumination.
