Juneteenth is an American holiday that celebrates the end of slavery in the United States. It dates back to June 19, 1865, when General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced that all enslaved people were free based on the Emancipation Proclamation issued by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863.
