Once upon a time, I tried to write a novel. I wrote for pages and pages (over 60,000 words!) but it was... boring. My characters were strong and the settings were interesting, but the plot was not. I was lost. And really bummed. So, I took a deep dive into story structure: Campbell/Vogler, Harmon, Snyder/Brody, Brooks, Carriger, Coyne, Crone, etc. There were lots of similarities but I wrestled with the differences.
