Traveling Stories is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization based in San Diego, California. We discovered that, according to the NAEP, 82% of kids in low-income households cannot read at grade level by the 4th grade. Kids learn to read up to the 3rd grade, beyond that kids read to learn. If they can't read, how can they learn? That explains why 2/3 of those who cannot read adequately eventually will either land in jail or end up on welfare.
